Harvey Marshall Shults

September 5, 1926 — September 3, 2019

 

Harvey Marshall Shults, 92 years old, passed away on September 3, 2019 in Kerrville, Texas.   He was born on September 5, 1926 in Chico, Texas to the late Hila Wright and Loss Shults. He attended school in Lytle. In 1945, at the age of 18, Harvey joined the army and did his basic training at Ft. Hood in Killeen, Texas. He fractured in spine in a bad accident when his troop truck flipped over. He was in the hospital for about four months. He was stationed in Ft. Riley, Kansas then transferred to Camp Picket in Virginia. After this, he went to Germany where he was in the Engineer Division helping work on roads and building bridges. He was discharged from the military in 1947. Harvey worked 27 years at Kelly Field Air Force Base in San Antonio as a Quality Control Supervisor.

 

     On December 22, 1951 Harvey married the love of his life, Elna Leona (Jones) Shults. Harvey and Elna made their home in Devine, Texas where they raised their three beautiful children. Harvey and Elna loved to play games and visit with friends and family. Harvey was a man of few words. He loved to play dominoes and won most of the time. He also loved to barbeque and was famous for his juicy brisket and rib-eye steaks. He made a tasty pot of pinto beans with home-made cornbread on the side.

 

     He and Elna had many friends and enjoyed hosting many social gatherings at their home. They liked to travel. Elna liked to bake and Harvey liked to eat. Harvey loved watching sports. He enjoyed football, baseball and basketball. The Boston Celtics and Red Sox were his favorite teams.   Harvey and Elna attended the Church of Christ. Later in life after the children left home, Harvey and Elna retired and relocated to Kerrville to live in the hill country. As Elna’s health began to decline, she and Harvey moved to West Texas to be closer to their daughter, Susie Ward. Elna died in 2010. Harvey lived with his daughter Susie for several years until his health worsened. The last few years of his life Harvey lived at Hilltop Village Nursing Home in Kerrville, Texas.

 

Harvey is preceded in death by his wife Elna, along with his mother, father, four sisters and three brothers. He is survived by his loving children and their spouses: Ted M. Shults (wife, Katie) of Devine, TX., Susie Ward (husband-Lloyd) of Sheffield, Tx. and Liz Smith (husband-Marvin) of Pocatello, Idaho. Three grandsons are left behind- Keil M. Shults (wife-Julie) of Corinth, Tx., Justin K. Ward (wife-Lindsay) San Angelo, TX. and Payden Ward of Sheffield, TX. Harvey had many wonderful friends in Devine, Lytle, Kerrville, San Antonio and Sheffield. Harvey had three great granddaughters; Elena and Halle Ward of San Angelo and Stella Shults of Corinth.

 

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 6, 2019 4:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. Hurley Funeral Home Chapel Lytle, Texas. Funeral services will be Saturday, September 7, 2019 1:00 P.M. Hurley Funeral Home Chapel Lytle, Texas. Following the service, Harvey will be buried by his loving wife, Elna, in Lytle Community Cemetery.
