Claudia Rae Carberry

May 5, 1945 — April 1, 2022

Claudia Rae Carberry, of Devine, TX, went to be with the Lord on April 1, 2022, at the age of 76. After suffering 3 massive strokes the first week of October 2017 she resided at Medina Valley Rehab Center in Castroville, TX. The last week of March she was transported to the hospital where she succumbed after suffering two additional small strokes.

Claudia was born on May 5, 1945, to Arnold D. Maas and Betty Jo (Mass) Sherwood in Williamsburg, IA. Claudia's mother moved the family to Cedar Rapids, IA in 1961, after the untimely death of her father in a boating accident. After arriving in Cedar Rapids, Claudia took a part time job as a cashier at a local supermarket chain (Sun Mart). This is where she met her future husband, Douglas Carberry. After graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1963, they began dating. In the fall of 1963, Claudia left to attend Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana. Upon returning home after her freshman year, Douglas and Claudia started dating again. Claudia decided not to return to college after becoming engaged to Douglas that summer. She decided to attend Cedar Rapids Business College, where she received a degree in Bookkeeping.
They were married on June 19, 1965, at Trinity Lutheran Church and moved to Hiawatha, IA. Three years later they were blessed with their first child, Brenda. Upon moving back to Cedar Rapids, three years later, they were blessed again with their second child, Michelle.
In 1973, they took a major step and bought their own Supermarket (Sun Mart). After operating it for two years, it was sold and the family moved to Nebraska. After several years in Nebraska, they found their way back to Cedar Rapids. Finally in 1981, they moved to Texas, settling in Rockport on the Gulf Coast. In 1984, they moved to their final destination in Devine, TX.
In 1999 Claudia and Doug founded Divine Egyptian Arabians with the purpose of breeding, raising and competing straight Egyptian Arabian horses, an enterprise Claudia was very hands on and dedicated to. She enjoyed hearing about and seeing pictures of her horses on Doug's visits with her at the nursing home.

During these years, Claudia finished up her Associates degree, was a bookkeeper for numerous companies and individuals, was the District Leader for Girl Scouts, and served her community and her church. She provided over 30 years of service to her church, Divine Savior Lutheran Church and loved working with the children of the congregation.
Claudia joins her Father, Grandparents, Nephew, Aunts and Uncles in Heaven. She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Douglas Carberry, daughters: Brenda Wall and Michelle Carberry, grandchildren: Devin Moore and Autum Moore, mother: Betty Jo Sherwood, sister: Cynthia Johnson, brother: Dudley and Roberta Maas, sisters-in-laws: Nancy Carberry, Bonnie Fulgham, Linda and Tom Roundy, and numerous nieces and nephews.
