With heavy hearts, we announce the death of our mother, Ramona A. Chavira. Ramona passed away peacefully in New Braunfels, TX on July 4, 2025. Ramona was born in Biry, Texas on October 30, 1941, to Lino and Refugia Aguilar.
Ramona was predeceased by her parents and her sisters, Jesusa Perez and Maria Monreal. Ramona was also predeceased by her son John David Chavira, grandsons Jason Turmel and Christopher Alters, and great-granddaughter Ariana Aguinaga.
Ramona is survived by her children: Yolanda Aguinaga, Richard Chavira (Maggie), Ernesto Chavira (Bernadette), Victoria Valdez (Edward), Willliam Chavira (Amanda), James Chavira (Margie), and Elizabeth Cantu (Gunner). Ramona was a grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother.
Ramona was a Licensed Vocational Nurse, spending her career working in several of the local community nursing homes. She cared deeply for the residents entrusted to her care, ensuring that each was well cared for, protected from harm, and treated with the dignity and respect they deserved.
Ramona's greatest legacy will be her family. While she may have never been rich or even comfortable financially, her life was rich in the family she raised. Her home was never empty on holidays or birthdays, we all looked forward to her fresh homemade tortillas to go with whatever was being barbecued. Christmas was never the same without her homemade tamales.
Our mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, her last years were filled with tumultuous times, as a diagnosis like that can bring. We are thankful that the pervasive attitude of apathy shown to her by the staff at the local nursing home where our mother spent years working, resulted in her transfer to John Paul II Nursing Home in Kenedy, Texas. Our mother received patient, compassionate, faith-based, loving care by the Sisters, nurses, and nursing aides at John Paul II that will always be remembered and appreciated. We thank the staff at Brooke Army Medical Center, Eden Hill Communities in New Braunfels and Suncrest Hospice for their care in her final days.
