Vernell Heimann Sultenfuss
October 2, 1928 - June 26, 2025
With hearts full of love and gratitude, we share the passing of Vernell Sultenfuss, age 96, on June 26, 2025. A devoted Catholic, Vernell's life was a blessing to all who knew her, a shining example of patience, kindness, and unwavering love. We are thankful beyond measure for her long, healthy life and for the gift of having her with us in such good spirit and strength for so many years. Vernell lived in her home until the final week of her life and, true to her vibrant nature, was even dancing at a family party just two weeks before her passing.
Vernell was born in Fredericksburg, Texas, to William and Dora Gold Heimann. She moved to San Antonio as a young woman, where she attended Burbank High School. She worked at Joske's in the credit department, where she met her beloved husband, Alfred Sultenfuss, who worked as a stock boy. They enjoyed many happy times together, including bowling on the Joske's league. In July 1963, Vernell and Alfred moved to Devine, Texas, where they raised their family and became active members of the community.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Sultenfuss; infant daughter, Nancy Sultenfuss; Great Grandson Kaleb Sultenfuss; parents, William and Dora Heimann; brother, William Heimann (and sisters-in-law Diann and Barbara Heimann); sisters, Lilian Heimann Jones (brother-in-law Jerry Jones), Ida May Bisang (brother-in-law Robert Bisang), and Mary Ann Spivey (brother-in-law Harold Spivey).
Vernell is survived by her sons: Richard Sultenfuss (wife Cynthia), Jerome Sultenfuss, and William Sultenfuss (wife Jodie). She was a cherished Oma to Mark, Daniel, Robin, Kevin, and Shaun Sultenfuss and was blessed with many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Vernell's life was rich with simple joys and deep devotion. She loved cooking, gardening, farming, and canning - sharing the fruits of her labor with family and friends. A talented musician, she found happiness in playing the accordion and in the fellowship of her bunco club. She enjoyed teaching cooking at the 4-H club and, alongside Alfred, delighted in teaching children about beekeeping at the Texas Folklife Festival. Her fondness for the color purple and her gentle, generous spirit brightened every room she entered.
Vernell embodied the spirit of Proverbs 31:28-29: "Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: 'Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.'"
